Solar Panel Removal & Reinstall (Detach and Reset) for Roof Replacement

Certified Roofing Contractor CCC1336138 · Electrical Contractor EC13004592 · 4.7★ from 1,400+ Google reviews

Your roof needs replacing, but there are solar panels on it. The panels have to come off before the old roof can, and go back on once the new roof is done. Our roofing crew and our solar electrical team work together, so one company plans the whole job: removing your system, replacing the roof, and reinstalling and testing your panels.

Is it time for a new roof under your solar?

  • Leaks or ceiling stains near or under the panels
  • Shingles that are curling, cracking, missing or shedding granules around the array
  • A roof near the end of its expected life, or one your insurer has flagged at renewal
  • Storm damage to the roof under or around the panels (see Roof Repair & Storm Damage)
  • Leaks at the solar mounts that keep coming back (see Solar Panel Repair & Service)

Not sure? We start with an assessment of both the roof and the solar system and tell you plainly what we find.

Our detach and reset process

  1. Roof and solar assessment. A roofer inspects the roof and a member of our solar team looks at the panels, racking, wiring and inverter(s), and we photograph what we find.
  2. Written estimate. You get one clear scope covering the solar removal, the new roof and the reinstall. No pressure, no obligation.
  3. Permits and utility paperwork. We pull the permits the job needs with your local building department and handle the utility paperwork for disconnecting and reconnecting your system.
  4. Safely disconnect and remove. We shut down and disconnect the system, then take down the panels and racking and label the parts so everything goes back where it belongs.
  5. Store the equipment on site. Your panels and parts are labeled and stored safely on site while the roof work is done.
  6. New roof with sealed mounts. Our roofing crew tears off the old roof, checks the deck and installs the new roof to current Florida code, with proper flashing and sealing at each new solar mount.
  7. Reinstall and reconnect. We reinstall the racking and panels and reconnect the system. Electrical work is performed under our Florida Electrical Contractor license EC13004592.
  8. Test the system. We power the system back up and confirm it's producing and that your monitoring is back online.
  9. Final inspections. We schedule the final inspections with the building department.

Why one company for the roof and the solar matters

  • One point of contact. You don't have to coordinate a roofer and a solar company, or schedule one around the other.
  • Roof penetrations sealed by the roofer who installed the roof. The same team that builds your new roof flashes and seals every solar mount, so the new roof and the solar mounts are built as one job.
  • One plan, one schedule. The removal, the roof and the reinstall are planned together from the start.

Solar removal and reinstall FAQs

How long does a detach and reset take?

It depends on the size of your roof and your solar system, permits and weather. The panels come off before the roof work starts and go back on after it's done. We'll give you a schedule with your estimate.

Will my system work the same after it's reinstalled?

We reconnect and test the system before we finish, and confirm it's producing and that your monitoring is back online. If we find a problem with any equipment during removal, we'll tell you before going further.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Replacing a roof in Florida needs a permit and a final inspection, and reconnecting a solar system can need its own permit, depending on your local building department. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections.

Do I need to tell my utility?

Your utility may need to be notified when your system is disconnected and reconnected. We handle the utility paperwork for you and go over what your utility requires during your assessment.

Can you do it with an insurance roof claim?

We work with your insurance claim and provide documentation of roof damage. Your insurer decides coverage. See Florida roof insurance claims.

Can you do it if another company installed my panels?

Yes. We detach and reset solar systems that other companies installed. We'll look at your system during the assessment and tell you what we find.

I'm using a different roofer. Can you just remove and reinstall the panels?

Yes. We can handle only the solar removal and reinstall and work around your roofer's schedule. The panels come off before your roofer starts and go back on once the new roof is done.
